Developing a Value Study Before painting a scene it's a good idea to do a value study. This will show the dark and light areas to serve as a guide on how dark or light I need to mix my paint. I start with a pencil sketch.
Next, I do a painted version of the value study on the surface I plan to do the painting on.
Then begin painting the sky, background trees, and come forward in the painting.
Finally, once all of the colors are blocked in, details can be developed.
